This is a question we get asked all the time at Primera Sports and it’s a cut and dry answer: ‘YES’. However, there are some stipulations to them being road legal.

A road legal electric bike must be pedal assisted so you cannot have an accelerator; if it does it’s then classed as a moped that needs to be registered with the DVLA. Another thing which makes the bikes legal to be on the road is the speed they are limited to – an assisted speed of 15.5 mph. The full range of E-bikes that we sell are all compliant with the law in the UK, so they are road legal electric bikes.

The fact that electric bikes are legal for anyone to ride offers a great option for you to commute on. Not only do you save massive amounts on fuel and parking costs, but you are keeping fit and active.

A great e-bike for commuting would be the Orbea Gain. The lightweight nature of this bike and the ability to ride the bike with no assistance makes it the perfect option to get your workout in and then get assistance on the cruise home. Orbea also offer you the ability to cruise in to work without working up a sweat so you have a clean, comfy day in the office. If you need to carry items such a laptop, files or any other heavy equipment, electric bikes make carrying such items a breeze.

Orbea Gain was designed to enhance your ride, not dominate it. The ‘Enough Power’ and ‘Enough Energy’ concepts result in an exceptionally lightweight, sportive and rideable e-bike – a machine that heeds the call of the open road. Gain embraces your sweat and hard work and works in unison with your efforts to tick off the kilometers. System interfaces are modern, integrated and sleek. There are no bulky components to reduce the riding experience; distractions have been minimized, so it’s just you, Gain and the hours ahead.

Can you get a speeding ticket on an E-bike?

Another question we get asked regularly is can you get a speeding ticket on an electric bike? As a result of them being limited to 15.5 mph, on a standard highway you would need to pedal above this speed to trigger a speed camera. There have been some instances of people being caught speeding on cycle paths with a designated speed limit which is normally 10 mph. So, with regards to the ability to get a speeding ticket, then yes you can if on a cycle path. If you treat it the same as any other vehicle and keep to the prescribed speed limit you will be fine.

Do you require a licence for an E-bike?

One of the benefits of an electric bike is that you don’t require a licence. If you don’t have one or are unable to obtain one you can jump on one of these and away you go! This opens E-bikes up to a whole new type of ride. For example, someone with medical limitations, E-bikes offer the ability to be inclusive for everybody to ride. Take a browse at one of the best models of bikes to get into electric bikes: the Cube Touring Hybrid.

Years of experience developing hybrid mountain bike frames have gone into the Cross Hybrid ONE. You may never intend to ride further off-road than a forest track or canal towpath, but isn’t it reassuring to know that your Bosch e-bike has real go-anywhere pedigree? We thought so too.

That’s the reason you’ll find features like double butted aluminium superlite tubes and a tapered head tube, for extra strength without extra weight. Schwalbe’s Smart Sam tyres have the grip to cope with pretty much any surface, while the Suntour suspension fork smooths out the rough edges and the powerful Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes serve up plenty of all-weather stopping power. The reliable and powerful Bosch drive unit and integrated battery are stars of the show, of course, feeding both yours and the motor’s power to the rear wheel via Shimano’s slick gears. And, with a trapeze frame option and a wide range of sizes, we’ve got every rider covered. Hop on, take off and explore.
