Details
At launch it was hailed as our most comfortable and versatile bikes ever. With modern MTB inspired geometry – long top and head tubes and a short stem offers nimble, confidence-inspiring handling. The press loved it: “exceptional ride quality” (Cycling Plus), “a highly versatile bike” (IMB), “the best bike of this genre” (Offroad CC). The bike has 5 separate bottle mounting points to allow for many luggage carrying options. The star buy, matching our aluminium frame with the highly acclaimed gravel specific Shimano GRX400 groupset in 2 x 10 guise with hydraulic disc brakes.
Primera verdict:
The Merida Silex 400 is my favourite alloy gravel bike on the market. Merida have designed the bike from the ground up with endurance geometry and a tall headtube whilst utilising their expert frame building knowledge – retaining a sensible price point too! Well above class in terms of component specification; hydraulic disc brakes, GRX gravel specific gearing and a fresh blue colourway are worthy upgrades from the Silex 200 model. A true all-rounder: all weather commuting, weekend gravel off-piste adventures and a do-it-all family bike.
Rider review:
‘Merida Silex 400 was my first introduction to gravel biking. After seeing all my friends enjoying some faster off-road rides I thought it was time to join them. I test rode a few bikes and came to the realisation that I needed to spend about £1500 to get the bike with the specs I liked. I wanted a carbon bike but it was out of my reach. The Merida Silex 400 looked like a good option with a really nice alloy frame and carbon forks. The Primera mechanics made the tyres tubeless for me with the Muc-Off tyre sealant, which has been very reliable. I only had the Silex 400 bike for a couple of months, but so far I have done 700 miles on tracks with a mix of gravel and sand. The tyres fitted are very good and have plenty of room for muddy rides. Overall, I’m really pleased with the Merida Silex 400 gravel bike and would recommend it to anyone looking to spend a similar amount.’
