Avoiding Trouble This Winter
Hundreds of passengers were stranded at Victoria station on Wednesday 1st December after the freezing conditions meant trains were cancelled.
But what about those who prefer to cycle everywhere and avoid public transport?
The recent cold snap has been enough to make any cyclist want to hang up his Specialized bike until it improves. But for some, the lure of the open air is too much and they need to make adjustments to keep themselves safe. Our advice is:
- If it has snowed, cycle only on snow that is crunchy under your tyres. You are much less likely to slip and have an accident.
- Watch out for black ice, shiny and glassy roads are usually indicative of this menace.
- Wear reflective stripes, commuters will have to work harder to get about as normal so are less likely to see you.
- Invest in specialized helmets to keep you safe.
- Never tailgate, always keep a good distance between yourself and cars in front and behind you, if you slip and fall there’s less chance you’ll get pulled under a car. Grim, but true.
- Wear the right clothing, Assos have designed a range of clothes to see you through the icy period and know that it is prudent to wear thin layers stacked up.
